MRS. ALESSANDRA ZAMPIERI

Director of Sustainable Resources Directorate at the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission.

Alessandra's career began in Brussels, where she joined the European Commission immediately after graduating in Economics from the University of Genoa. She spent several years in the formulation of maritime and aviation policies, first in the relevant Commission services and then in the Cabinet of Vice President Loyola De Palacio.

In 2009, she was appointed Head of Unit "Maritime Affairs" at the Joint Research Center and was responsible for the development of scientific and technological methodologies for EU policies relating to the sea. She later founded the Knowledge Center on Migration and Demography, which provides EU migration policymakers with policy-relevant information and evidence-based analysis. In her last post before being appointed Director, Alessandra held the role of Deputy Director and Head of the JRC's Disaster Risk Management Unit, with the task of strengthening the EU's capacity to cope with natural hazards and disasters caused by 'man. In particular, Alessandra oversaw research activities in support of the Green Deal, digital transformation and a stronger Europe in the world.
